Snowshoe Thompson
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (January, 1996)
Authors: Nancy Smiler Levinson and Joan Sandin
Average review score:

Interesting and enjoyable for the whole family
Snowshoe Thompson is a wonderful book about an immigrant who has helped a young boy communicate with his father. This book has kept the interest of our 1/2 year old and 3 year old during our night time story reading ritual. Having read it at least 100 times, I am still delighted to read it to our boys.

This textbook reads like a novel. Very insightful, interesting, thought provoking comments. To bad it's out of print!

Songs of the Doomed : More Notes on the Death of the American Dream
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (03 December, 2002)
Author: Hunter Thompson
Average review score:

Excellent Sampler
This is an excellent introduction to the range of Thompson's writings though the early 1990's. It includes samples of his two early novels (Prince Jellyfish, The Rum Diary) and articles and excerpts from his later journalism and fiction ("Let The Trials Begin" is worth the price of the book). No duplication of material fromThe Great Shark Hunt, his earlier collection. An excellent audio version was realeased when the book was first published.
This book gives you some idea of what he was up to during the time covered by the two volumes of letters he's published and shows that his humor and sense of outrage have matured better than, say, Mark Twain's during a comparable stretch of his writing career.

Soul of the River: Life in the Thousand Islands
Published in Paperback by General Store Publishing House (August, 1997)
Author: Shawn Thompson
Average review score:

Colorful folk of a colorful region.
An amazing work, compiling years of interviews with local folk on the St. Lawrence River, this latest study by Shawn Thompson repeats little incorporated in earlier works, but continues the focus of resent research: ordinary people. Essentially an archive of oral history, the content is largely documentation of interviews, mostly presented verbatim. Fiction could not invent such local color. If the vast undertaking may be faulted, one might complain that the author sought local color, to the degree that an unbalanced collective portrait results. There are too many rum-runners, perhaps, too many indigent hermits, and too few typical folk. Given than caveat, this big book must be appreciated as Thompson's major work to date. It will be a lasting classic of the regional literature.

Southern Pacific's Coast Line Pictorial
Published in Hardcover by Signature Press (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Anthony W. Thompson and John R. Signor
Average review score:

A good companion to the first volume with great photos
I bought this book because I enjoyed the first volume so much (see my review for Southern Pacific's Coast Line.)

However, the second volume might be a bit of a letdown to those expecting something similar to the first volume. Signor indeed covered it all the first time around, and therefore does not attempt to do it again in this volume. Southern Pacific's Coast Line Pictorial is exactly what it professes to be, a companion edition that has some great photos. There are over 600 photographs; 140 of which are in color. Richard Steinheimer fans will like this book as 85 of Stein's photographs made it into the book.

I never did verify if there were pictures reprinted in the second volume that also appeared in the first, but if there were, their numbers were small based on my recollection.

The bottom line is that if you loved the first volume of Southern Pacific's Coast Line, then you should buy this volume too. It isn't the narrative with pictures that the first one is, but it compliments the first book nicely. It's priced high but worth it if you're looking for memories of the SP and its premier passenger line. You can always check out Signature Press' website for the description on this book that Amazon seems to be lacking.

Spanish Slaughter (Wilderness)
Published in Paperback by Leisure Books (September, 1997)
Author: David Thompson
Average review score:

A gripping, action-filled story.
Mr. Thompson, a.k.a. David Robbins, has done his research. Each WILDERNESS book is factual, based on journals of the period. His stories flow smoothly, involving human drama as much as realistic action. If you want a good read, try these or his DAVY CROCKETT books. You won't regret it.

Speaking for Impact: Connecting with Every Audience (Part of the Essence of Public Speaking Series)
Published in Paperback by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (23 November, 1998)
Authors: Shirley E. Nice and William D. Thompson
Average review score:

Every Which Way, But Loose.
I was well into the book still wanting to say: "No tell me about the BIG impact trick." Then I realized the book was full of technique and ideas from every possible angle. Scientific, artistic, graphics, lists, logic, emotion and even down to: "It's something like this." I would be amazed if there was an angle about impact that is not in this book. The book is easy to read but I will be reading it again and again. Sometimes the smallest insight opens the biggest doors. My only complaints would be that sometimes the word selection is weak or wrong and some poor sentences slipped through the process or were wrongly slipped in by an editor at the last minute. Sometimes the author is high handed with branding some techniques as losers. You will know where she stands when you read this book. I am very happy I found and read this book so early in my quest to find expert help on public speaking.

The Spirit of the Soil: Agriculture and Environmental Ethics (Environmental Philosophies)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (December, 1994)
Author: Paul B. Thompson
Average review score:

Superb general intro. to politics and ethics of agriculture
The educated layperson will find Dr. Thompson's *Spirit of the Soil* to be a perfect introduction to the bewilderingly complex ethical and economic questions that increasingly surround modern agriculture. The author ruthlessly dissects politically charged and often intentionally vague terms and concepts such as "sustainability," "stewardship," the consumer mentality, and the flawed yet indispensible materialism of modern production agriculture. This book will be enormously helpful to anyone who wants to attack farm policy with a more mature understanding of the ethical issues upon which the cultural and physical sustainability of modern agriculture depends

Spotlight-Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Signal Processing Approach
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (June, 1996)
Authors: Charles V. Jakowatz, Daniel E. Wahl, Paul H. Eichel, Dennis C. Ghiglia, and Paul A. Thompson
Average review score:

Excellent treatment of auto-focus techniques from the leader
This book describes the PGA algorithm which is used extensively in all modern SAR systems. A clear and broad treatment of SAR processing. This should be the first SAR book you reach for. It's nice to read about algorithms from the originators for a change.
